Explanatory statements

 
You are invited to participate in our online survey. Please read the following explanatory statements in full before deciding whether or not to participate in the study. You may print or download the page if you wish to keep it.
 
This study is conducted by Dr. Kazuko Shinohara (Principal Investigator), professor at the Division of Language and Culture Studies, Institute of Engineering, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. The study aims to learn more about the relationships between linguistic sounds and perceptual images. If you decide to participate, you will answer an online questionnaire starting from the next page, which will take approximately 15 minutes or less to complete. Eligibility under the Japanese law requires you to be 20 years of age or older. We are seeking native speakers of English for this study.
 
This project is carried out under the approval of the Research Ethics Committee and the President of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (approval number: 190405-3022).
 
Please read the following statements to the full.
 
1. Purpose of the study: To investigate the associations between linguistic sounds and perceptual images.

2. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you are free to withdraw from the study by closing the browser window at any time without any penalty. As your responses to the questionnaire will be anonymous, it will not be possible to withdraw data once you have completed your answers and submitted them all. If you choose to leave the study before finishing it, your responses will not be included.

3. In the survey, you will be asked to read words in an unknown language, and to indicate how you feel about each word by choosing one from several options. After the main questions, we will additionally ask for your age, gender (you can avoid answering), and your native language. You are not required to provide your name, address, or anything that can identify you. Approximately 80 speakers of English will participate in this online survey.

4. We cannot guarantee you any direct benefit, but your participation will indirectly contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge about human beings.

5. No physical or social risks are reasonably expected when answering the questionnaire.

6. Your responses will only be directly accessible to Dr. Kazuko Shinohara. The results of analyses will be shared within the research team under the supervision of Dr. Kazuko Shinohara.

7. All the responses will be made anonymous. Only statistical tendencies will be analyzed. There is no possibility that your identity will be made clear.

8. The results of statistical analyses may be published in an academic journal and/or presented at conferences. No individual responses will be disclosed.

9. We will store your responses in a password protected secure computer file. The information will be stored for a period of 5 years, after which it will be deleted.

10. There is no conflict of interest with any companies or outside organizations.
